This generic Sovaldi will be sold in the 91 countries that are part of the program that the company created to grant access to the medicine in developing countries.
The new pill (Sofosbuvir and Ledipasvir in one tablet) is the new hope for people in many countries that cannot afford the branded medicine. Gilead has signed agreements with a couple of pharmaceuticals companies in India to license them to produce a generic version of the Harvoni medicine. The process is running and expectations are that before the end of 2015 the Indian government will issue the permits to manufacture the generic version.
Many speculations has risen about the price, but the entire treatment of three months is expected to get into the market for a price around $1,000.
Harvoni is a polymerase inhibitor used to treat patients infected with Genotype 1 and 4 of Hepatitis C. The treatment can be administered to patients coinfected with the HIV virus and suffering from liver cirrhosis. In some cases this medicine has been used successfully to treat patients that cannot be treated with therapies of interferon.
It is important to say that this treatment has been broadly proved in its efficacy and safety. The medicine has been evaluated in six different studies with almost 2,000 participants.
